Info for Waiver Form

By signing below, you agree to adhere to all policies, safety procedures, and guidelines set forth in this agreement and the Studio Commons Woodshop Manual. Access to the woodshop is contingent upon maintaining a valid membership, completing the required orientation, and following all shop rules.

Studio Commons Woodshop Member Agreement

1. Billing & Payment Terms

  • Payment Schedule: Membership fees are billed monthly.

  • Lumber Invoicing: Lumber ordered through the shop via Moore Newton will be invoiced once the order is marked "Fulfilled" on the lumber order form. Unpaid invoices or unconfirmed orders will pause further lumber ordering privileges.

  • SawStop Cartridge Fee: If a member activates/triggers the SawStop safety mechanism on the table saw (e.g., via wet/green wood, metal, or improper use), the member is strictly responsible for a $100 replacement fee.

2. New Member Orientation

  • Mandatory Orientation Requirement: If joining Studio Commons for the first time, a new member must complete a new member orientation with staff prior to using the equipment or facility. Access to the woodshop and its machinery will be granted only after successful completion of this orientation.

3. Member Respect & Personal Property Policy

  • Respect for Members' Personal Belongings: Members are expected to maintain a culture of mutual respect. Do not touch, move, or take anything from another member's storage unit, shelf, or desk without prior explicit approval from that member.

4. General Rules & Shop Access

  • Orientation & Access: All members must complete a woodshop orientation and sign this waiver prior to using any machinery. Members have 24-hour access to the shop.

  • Clean-Up Mandate: Members are required to allocate at least 15 minutes at the end of every session to sweep/vacuum dust, return tools to their proper home, and clean off machines.

  • Closing Procedure: Stools must be placed upside down on work tables, and areas under and around work tables must be thoroughly vacuumed.

  • Guest & Pet Policy: Guests and pets are strictly prohibited in the woodshop area for safety reasons. Dogs and human guests are welcome in the common kitchen space or front studio area.

  • Zero Tolerance Policies: Studio Commons maintains a zero-tolerance policy for workplace violence, threats, intimidation, and the possession or use of drugs and alcohol. Anyone under the influence will have their membership terminated immediately.

5. Safety, Attire & Tool Etiquette

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): OSHA-approved eye protection (with side shields or over-prescription glasses) is required at all times when operating tools or machinery. Members must provide their own PPE.

  • Required Attire: Closed-toed shoes are required (no Crocs). Long hair must be tied back, long sleeves rolled up, loose clothing/drawstrings tucked in, and rings, bracelets, and gloves removed prior to operating machinery.

  • Strict "No Cut" List: To prevent equipment damage, members must strictly avoid cutting:

  • Found wood (unless thoroughly scanned for metal and verified below 10–12% moisture content)

  • Green/wet wood

  • Plastics

  • Metals

  • Miter Saw Usage: Cuts must be made in 2 to 3 passes to avoid kickback. Never cut material shorter than 12 inches (1 foot) on the miter saw.

  • Incidents & Log: Any broken equipment, snapped blades, or personal injuries must be logged immediately in the Woodshop Log near the sliding door or reported directly to staff.

6. Storage & Disposables

  • Storage Allocations: Taller lumber (>3 ft) and plywood panels must be stored in designated elevator storage areas and clearly labeled with your name. Short lumber (<3 ft) must be kept on personal shelves.

  • Disposables: Members must supply their own disposables (blue tape, glue, sandpaper, finishes).

  • Trash Disposal:

  • Green Bin: Wood shavings only (no sharp offcuts).

  • Small White Bins: Scrap wood offcuts.

  • Black Bags: Regular trash.

  • Red Metal Bin: Oily rags, solvent wipes, and flammable disposables.

7. Cancellation Policy

Members may cancel their membership at any time by providing at least two (2) weeks' notice prior to their next scheduled billing date. Cancellation requests must be submitted by email to studio leads. If notice is provided less than two weeks before the next billing cycle, the member will be responsible for the upcoming month's full membership fee, and the cancellation will take effect at the end of that subsequent billing period.
8. Studio Conduct
You're respectful of your fellow members, staff and the community and will do your best to be kind.

9. Liability Waiver & Acknowledgment

I acknowledge that woodworking involves inherent risks, including but not limited to severe physical injury or property damage. I agree to operate machinery only if I have received proper training and feel confident in doing so safely. I agree to release, indemnify, and hold harmless Studio Commons, its owners, employees, and agents from any liability or claims arising from my use of the facilities.

I have read, understood, and agree to abide by all policies set forth in this waiver and the Studio Commons Woodshop Manual.
